What's Changing in Ohio Education
There are several initiatives impacting Ohio schools over the next few years. Below there is a link to several one-page handouts that explain some of the big issues along with a timeline of key implementation dates.
New Learning Standards/Common Core
Tuslaw is fully implementing new College and Career Ready education standards in 2014-2015 school year.
Tuslaw is participating in the 2014-2015 Online Tests. Ohio is developing computer-based state tests for the 2014-2015 school year in math, English language arts, science and social studies. There are two platforms for the new tests. Pearson is developing the math and English language arts tests. AIR is developing the social studies and science tests. While both platforms are similar in many ways, there are differences. For more information please click the links below.
Third Grade Reading Guarantee
On Monday, June 25, 2012 Governor Kasich signed Senate Bill 316. This bill's main topic was Third Grade Reading Guarantee. The Third Grade Reading Guarantee gives greater emphasis to reading instruction and intervention in the early grades. All schools in Ohio are required to diagnose all students in grades kindergarten through three, then create individualized reading improvement and monitoring plans and provide intensive reading interventions to the students who need extra support. New Graduation Requirements
Ohio House Bill 487 established new requirements for earning a high school diploma in Ohio. The new graduation requirements that take effect with the class of 2018. These are students who are entering ninth grade for the first time in the 2014-2015 school year. Students in the classes of 2014-2017 and those who are repeating ninth grade this school year will continue to operate under Ohio's current graduation requirments.
